To attend, PLEASE NOTE PAID RESERVATION DEADLINE: MONDAY, FEB. 26.

Join us Saturday March 2 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM for our annual St David’s Day Luncheon Event—The day we celebrate Wales’ patron saint and all things Welsh.

At 11:00 AM, we begin with a social hour. Meet friends old and new; enjoy cheese and crackers, crudités, and fresh fruit. Cash bar available.

There will be time to browse our tables, have your photo taken with two of our Board members in Welsh national dress, and find your Welsh roots on our map!

This year, we will be in the more intimate Library Room at The Nutmeg, its tables adorned with daffodils for St. David’s Day.

Lunch will be served promptly at 12:00 noon following a video message from the First Minister of Wales..

There will be a brief Annual Meeting during which the Board for 2024-2025 will be elected. If you are interested in joining the Board, or volunteering in any way, please use our contact form.

Our post-luncheon program includes two fascinating presentations:

Gillian Clarke - submitted photo

Gillian Clarke: National Poet of Wales 2008-2016 - presented by Michael Thurston, Helen Means Professor of English Language and Literature at Smith College.

Gillian Clarke was born in Cardiff and lives in Ceredigion.

Awarded the Queen’s Gold medal for Poetry in 2010 and the Wilfred Owen Award in 2012.

She has written radio and theatre drama, and translated poetry and prose from Welsh. The Gathering/Yr Helfa, commissioned by the National Theatre of Wales, was performed on Snowdon in September, 2014.

Her work has been on the GCSE and A Level exam syllabus for over thirty years, and she performs her poetry regularly for student audiences at Poetry Live, and in several European cities. Picador published her Selected Poems in 2016. Her tenth collection of poems, Zoology, was published by Carcanet in 2017. Her version of the book-long 7th century Welsh poem, Y Gododdin, is to be published by Faber in 2019

Our presenter, Michael Thurston, is the Helen Means Professor of English Language and Literature at Smith College. He is the author of Making Something Happen: American Political Poets between the World Wars, The Underworld Descent in Twentieth-Century Poetry: From Pound and Eliot to Heaney and Walcott, and (with Nigel Alderman) Reading Postwar British and Irish Poetry.

He has published numerous essays on modern poetry and modernist writing, including three on Hemingway. He has published numerous essays on modern poetry and modernist writing, including three on Hemingway.

He is the editor of the Norton Critical Edition of The Sun Also Rises and is writing the Cambridge Introduction to Ernest Hemingway. He currently serves as the provost and dean of faculty at Smith.

 

Here Be Dragons: An Exploration into Dinas Emrys - presented by Tempest Morgan, historian specializing in Medieval Britain

Dinas Emrys has been shrouded in myth and mystery for centuries.

From dragons to King Arthur to buried treasure, there is a vast amount of ancient lore to explore and uncover on this rocky and wooded hillock near Beddgelert in Gwynedd.

Dig through the archaeological records and hear the literary tales behind one of Wales’ most important historical sites.

Our presenter, Tempest Morgan, is a historian who specializes in Medieval Britain. She obtained her MA with Honors in Museum and Gallery Studies from Kingston University in London, UK and has worked for institutions such as the National Trust and Historic Royal Palaces.

We will end our day together singing the Welsh National Anthem.
